Guide Review - Rembrandt 400 Years DVD This documentary starts with a look at the environment that Rembrandt lived in -- the events that were happening and the position the Netherlands had in the world. It then looks at Rembrandt's life using period documents, maps, and art (by Rembrandt and others), and modern-day shots. This is followed by two chapters looking at Rembrandt's work and his painting and etchnique techniques. This to me was the best part of the DVD. It's a slideshow of his work, showing examples you've seen and others you're unlikely to have seen. I did, however, wish that there were captions showing the names of the pieces, and perhaps which museum they were located in. The Printstudio provides a selection of etchings, paintings, and Rembrandt-related documents to print out. If you needed to do a project on Rembrandt, this would be very useful. It's a pity, though, that there isn't any information given with these, not even the name of the paintings. Overall, this isn't the definite documentary on Rembrandt, but it's one I'm pleased to have watched, because it's taught me some more about the artist, the times he lived in, and given some insight into the preservation of his legacy. It's also made me add "Visit Rembrandt Museum" onto my travel wish list.
