A biography of General Peter Nikolaevich Wrangel, the last comander of White forces in the Russian civil War and the revered leader of the White Army in exile. It seeks to do justice to a man who, according to many contemporaries, made a striking impression on all those who met him and generally inspired feelings of devotion among his followers. It traces Wrangel’s path from his privileged boyhood, through service as a guards officer during a period of war and revolution to his rise to the summit of authority among anti-Bolshevik armies, thence to defeat, emigration and a mysterious demise in a suburb of Brussels. Surprisingly, it is the first comprehensive and impartial study of Wrangel’s life to appear in English.
